The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has awarded the distinction of fellow to 391 members, including five from the University of California San Diego. The new UC San Diego fellows, who will be recognized on Feb. 18 during the 2017 AAAS Annual Meeting in Boston, are Richard Carson, Konstantine Georgakakos, David Gough, Larry Smarr, and Lynne Talley.

Raffaele Ferrari, a Scripps/UC San Diego alumnus and a professor of oceanography at MIT will present the Cody Award public lecture at 3 p.m. on Oct. 12, 2016, in the Robert Paine Scripps Forum for Science, Society and the Environment (Scripps Seaside Forum), 8610 Kennel Way in La Jolla, Calif. Admission is free (seating is available on a limited basis) for the lecture, “The Role of Ocean Turbulence in Climate.”

Charles “Chip” Cox, a professor emeritus at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, passed away on Nov. 30, 2015. Cox conducted research on oceanic electromagnetic fields and the exploration of small-scale ocean structures, including measuring fine-scale fluctuations in temperature and salinity within ocean waters to understand the intensity of ocean turbulence.
